In our organisation, as more departments have adopted Alloy, the number of layers has increased. We currently have 95 layers and each of those has many layer styles, which has made me think how helpful it would be if there was an additional third nested layer.
I understand that it isn’t a simple matter to implement, I have researched online regarding nested navigation and multi-level menu design and have found there is no clear agreement on best practice on the appropriate number of nested layers, so this request can only be considered anecdotal from my personal experience. I also understand that there might be considerations regarding compatibility with mobile app versions of Alloy. I’m also aware of the Tags feature, which does have its uses.
Aside from an extra nested level, there are some other layers related ideas I would like to put forward -
Hi Tom, thanks for submitting these ideas, just to let you know, I've split the idea into two separate records. Organising layers and layer styles has been something we have looked into quite a bit. The main options open to us were to arrange layers in a tree-like, folder structure, or keep them in an unstructured list, allowing for tagging and a more complex filtering method. There are benefits and limitations for both. We'll keep this idea open and potentially investigate again to see if there are any further improvements we can make in the area.
