Workflow - interrogate multiple designs when the first node is an interface that is on all the designs

We would like to be able build a workflow that has an interface as the first node (defects), and that you can then navigate to several defect designs to see if a custom attribute as been selected. The filter and navigate option within, implies that you can do it already, but it doesn't pull back any results.
